Herbal Quackery Presentation

Resident Guidelines

The Orthopaedic Learning Center will provide physicians with access to detailed information based on the science of medicine at all hours.  Textbooks and computer workstations are currently located in the Orthopaedic Surgery Residents' Room, West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Healthcare Center, Building 500, Room 3267 [code 5243].

Goal in establishing the Orthopaedic Learning Center (O.L.C.)

The Orthopaedic Learning Center will include an orthopaedic library, available at all hours, with up-to-date textbooks (paper, CD-ROM, and online), journals, and additional science based educational materials for the resident physicians training to become Orthopaedic Surgeons here at the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Healthcare Center.  The library will expand to include audiotapes, video recordings, surgical simulators, and computer-based interactive educational programs when the budget permits. Original materials will developed, and will be distributed to other programs training resident physicians in orthopaedic surgery.

In it's initial phase the O.L.C. will provide rapid access to information for physicians encountering new, puzzling, or critical patient problems.  A basic library of major orthopaedic texts and journals will be available around the clock. When a physician in training is on-call and in the hospital after hours there can be unavoidable periods of time spent waiting.  The after hours availability of a library and learning center would provide an opportunity to use that time productively.

Improving the availability of accurate science based educational materials and improving the training of resident physicians can be anticipated to have the immediate effect of improving the health care of the veterans who are patients at the Veterans Administration West Los Angeles Healthcare Center.  After their training, these physicians will practice in the community.  There will therefore be a longer-term benefit of improving the quality of available medical orthopaedic surgical care.  The currently available materials are adequate, and equivalent to what is available generally in equivalent training programs.  Establishing an Orthopaedic Learning Center, however, would allow us to surpass what is merely adequate and provide a more optimal learning environment for the physicians that we are training here.
