Welcome to the unofficial orthopaedic surgery service at the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Healthcare Center guidelines page.

These are just guidelines. Please tell me how to correct the errors here, and suggest how to make things better. Please feel free to come to me (building 500, room 6638), call me (310) 268-3663, page me (213) 286-0179 #73060, or alpha page 3100073060@page.metrocall.com when needed. You may use e-mail for suggestions, errors, ideas, etc.

This is a work in progress so please excuse broken links and the incomplete imperfect implementation.

Resident autonomy. An important component of your education is the development of decision-making and surgical skills. You should take the initiative in the surgical and clinical care of patients, with reassurance that the staff is available to support your work. You should inform me if you need more or less help and advice from the staff.

We need to know your schedule, so that if you will be out of town or otherwise unavailable, we can schedule the clinics accordingly. Please make sure I have a copy of the residents on call schedule.

Attitude. Talk to patients as thoughtful, intelligent people capable of understanding and deeply curious about their condition.

Confidentiality. Please don't leave patient records, x-rays, or notes where they can be seen by others. They must be in a locked room if unattended. Please don't leave a computer logged in with an open connection to CPRS or PACS. The Veterans Administration audits computer use.

PACS. The x-rays and most radiology imaging taken at the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Healthcare Center are almost all taken digitally, and available from the computerized system (PACS). There is a high resolution viewing station in the clinic. The stand-alone workstations in the clinic can access the images over the Intranet, but are a bit slower. (Web address "PACS" without the quotes. A user ID and Password are needed. [For User ID and Password call x41615, x41617]
