| Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&RS). In general we are asked to refer to the PM&RS service rather that directly to therapy, to avail ourselves of their assistance and expertise, and so that they can learn from assisting us in providing needed care to our patients. Direct referrals can be made when the medical condition of the patient requires it. Delays in rehabilitation after surgery, inpatient or outpatient, after fracture, hand injury, or other problems where delayed therapy would harm a patient, should not be tolerated. A consultation can be requested by direct contact of Randi Woodrow, director of PT, by e-mail or telephone (310) 268-3329. This can be expedited with a progress note documenting the need for therapy, and weight bearing status that is printed to the PT printer, NE158 Pre-operative therapy evaluation and treatment is appropriate for arthroplasty, and ACL reconstruction. Later the PT department will make this available for some other elective cases for which it is more difficult for the patient to learn precautions and exercises in the postoperative period. If PT is notified in advance of outpatient surgeries, a therapist can be available for crutch training, etc. when needed. We are developing and implementing protocols for guiding therapy, and your input is requested. |
